week2

This is Town Hall and I never noticied the monogramed letters. I cropped this picture also through Picasa so that I can highlight the window treatments and the sculpture and lights that surround the tunnel. I also played with the color and I feel like it brought out the details in the stone.

Week 2

This downtown is in New Haven. This is the top of City Hall that I originally shot at full length and then stuggled with finding the correct angle to crop it from. Through editing in Picasa I have warmed the color and added a few subtle effects.

Things around my neighborhood

This is an old auto body shop in my neighborhood. They fix antique cars..or maybe not, they been there for quit some time now.

What you see along the way

This was taken on Monday when my kids and I went for a nice drive and of course shopping.

My First Image

I used Picassa3 to adjust my first photo that was posted. I cropped the photo, then used the highlighting feature in "Tuning" and the Sepia feature in "Effects" to show another side of this photo, now, it can look like a small cave.

The rock in this photo reminded me of a whale

I shot this at St. Mary's by the sea.

My favorite spot!

This weeks assignment had me at my favorite spot....the beach!  I find it truly amazing how I've been simply using my camera for photos of my children (although great subjects) but having a specific task has been awe inspiring.  I used picasa to make some photos black & white and adjusted some shadowing.  I took 87 shots in one afternoon.  I have uploaded a few to fotothing and will do more in a couple days.
Life Interrupted- Some damage from Irene at my beach.  Loved the vein-looking roots

I loved the formation of the stone and the deep lined pattern

I particularly enjoyed all the beachlife in this one shot.  The contrasting color of the driftwood is key.
Thank you for all that have commented on my fotothing pics with great suggestions.  I will definitely keep them in mind in future shots :)

A Day at the Beach

This seagull is admiring the beach at Walnut Beach

A bird observing the sand formation in Aruba

I shot this photo close-up while on vacation in Aruba.

I was able to capture this seagull gliding over Walnut Beach in Milford over Labor Day weekend.

The door

Under the highway

It's amazing to see underneath a highway. The struture is so old while the top gets updated to sustain us on our journey

Week 3 - By the Sea

These photos were taken before sunset on Labor Day 2011 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT. The first photo is my favorite. Will post the rest on fotothing. When you have a chance, please visit fotothing "velezta" or Seaside Park itself for the most beautiful scenery, especially before sunset.

This photo is taken from the same location, but with a different setting on the camera. Notice the lighting is so different.

I am especially proud of the photo above of the lighthouse. Notice there is also a couple sitting on the rock wall watching the waves hitting those big rocks over and over again. Oh yes, there is a seagull flying by. Using Picasa to turn it to a B&W photo.

I hope this picture of the rocks with water flowing through to make it looks like a mini-waterfall meet week 3 assignment. Using Picasa i turned it to a B&W.

On the Beach at Harkness Park

This picture was taken with the intention of capturing the seaweed and the two starfish.  The driftwood was blocking the water in a pool.

One tree..different settings

What a difference imaging makes to the same picture, done in different ways. One looks very scary while the other shows the nature of the tree. This is the tree of life from animal kingdom in Disney..

On the Beach at Harkness Park

Harkness Park 9/5/2011 done in the late afternoon.  This picture was taken while lying on the beach with natural lighting.

Weekend wedding

I liked the way the sunset was reflecting on the lake

Here I tried to exaggerate the rays of sunlight coming from the clouds.
Sorry for the late post....I was having technical difficulties last night.  So, this is my 2nd post for week 2.  My husband and I went to a wedding this weekend in Brookfield at The Candlewood Inn.  There was a beautiful lake and it was just about sunset.

Dave P

Hello Class,
Well I think I finally have everthing figured out, thanks to Jerry.  My name is Dave Petrosky and I live in Colchester with my wife and two kids.  What a week it has been, we finally got power back on Friday evening. We had many trees down across the driveway and a few out back. Hope this blog finds everyone doing well.  Some of my interests are spending time with friends and family, sports and snowmobiling in northern Vermont.  I have a daughter 14 who is involved in track and field and cross country running and she is trying out for vollyball in her freshman year of high school.  My son 8 and loves games, Wii, DS, IPod touch and the computer. He has been playing baseball the last 3 years with dad as a coach.  I look forward to seeing everyones pictures.

I tried to capture different shadows using soft focus in black and white.

Week 2 Blog Cont'd

I'm posting two additional photos for week two which I think are pretty interesting photos. This photo was taken at dusk with the camera pointing upward. Picasa allowed me to enhance the shade on one side.

This picture below is a building in Shelton, CT. The reflection above the windows makes it look like you can see through the building. In reality, the reflection is of trees from across the street.

Night time at the beach

I love this picture, it's just so relaxing and soothing as night time sets in and the breeze from the water is felt on the beach during a quit, peaceful walk.

West Haven beach

This is a picture of some trees by my home just before it starts to turn night..

What inspires me

If you don't already know, I am one of the lucky three that are taking digital photography II this mod, and get to be included in your class blog. Jerry would like to see what inspires me, and when thinking this over, I came to a great realization. Don't get me wrong I love to browse the web looking for new ideas and compositions, but what truly makes me want to get off my butt and shoot photos are seeing the work of my friends. My friend Bill Kurtz has been very instrumental in guiding me and showing me how to get a great photo (he does not know this hehe), just by simply posting his on his facebook page. He was kind enough to share his flickr site with me so I can share it with you! He has some great shots of Irene, during and after, so please check them out! http://www.flickr.com/photos/captainkickstand/

Another inspiration for me is a website called stumbleupon. I use it all the time to discover new artists and new ways of creating. This is one of my favorite projects to go back and look at, I would love to try it out myself sometime. I know it has nothing to do with Lucy but check it out. http://www.pondly.com/2011/02/back-to-the-future/

Here are some other links that I found while stumbling. Now you see why I have such a hard time coming up with just one theme!!!

Hello everyone my name is Latoya Moore and I am majoring in Sociology with a concencration in Criminal justice. I have two kids. I love to shop and travel.
Hi Jennifer - your daughter Lucy is precious. I love the last photo - it almost looks like there are sparklers on the right side of the photo. Nice photo

Images of Colchester

These are photos of Cafe on Main in Colchester and the Nathaniel Foote house 1702. I used Black and white and tried to capture various shadows.

Week Two

What a long week that was! Hurricane Irene certainly tried to hold me back from this course, but fortunately for me my camera was all charged up before we lost power so I was able to get some great shots of Lucy outside. I found it tough to pick only two photos to upload this week, I want to put them all up! You can see the ten I uploaded today on my fotothing page. I could only charge my phone in the car, so Lucy and I hung out there for a few hours where I was able to snap this shot of her peeking out the window. She was also very much into playing in the tree limbs that we removed from the house, the pile was over five feet high but that didn't stop her from diving right in! The last photo is my absolute favorite. I took it on the Monday after Irene. The storm blew lots of random debris into our yard, including these two weathered and very much faded American flags. Lucy loved waving them at everyone that passed by that day, and her little bit of patriotism was a great pick-me-up for everybody, especially after such a disaster. Just seeing her enjoy herself so much while everyone else was pretty much traumatized was very inspiring and even a little bit emotional.

Week two.

At this point, in spite of the fact that we have massive power failures in Connecticut, and all the cleanup from the storm, it's important to get busy with your portfolio.  For this week you'll be out shooting in the built environment, with an emphasis on filling the frame with design, and paying close attention to the quality of light.

It goes without saying that flash will not be allowed to be used as it wrecks the quality of light in the picture. As of now,  I have only eight students on fotothing out of the class.  If you still are having trouble getting going, it's imperative that you call me or better yet, let me call you if you send me by e-mail your phone number and the best time to reach you.  I can walk you through the process of posting to this blog and setting up your fotothing account.

Please review the section of the syllabus for week two.  Most of all, have fun.

Week 2

Hi All,
This week I decided to drive through my home town, and some of the surrounding towns to find inspiration! I am from Derby and the down town area is filled with old buildings, churches, and fun signs! Below are what I thought were two good ones, check out fhotothing username dbisson to see some more! have a great holiday weekend!

By the Sea

Just as I was about to leave the beach this morning this Snowy Egret landed by the water about 30 feet away. He waded around in the water long enough for me to change lenses and snap this photo. I just couldn't resist!

I took this shot just before this morning at Southport to take advantage of the low light. I tuned it up in Picasa to mimic Weston's Point Lobos.

You're right.... the way the ivy is growing is different. Nice shot!!

The pavement as a weed vase

While walking downtown, I spotted this "vase for the weeds" in the middle of Main Street.

A Beam of Light at the train station

Just a note to everyone regarding this weeks assignment - all CT state parks and beaches are free admission today through Monday.

What a week!

Good afternoon, class!  I hope this post finds everyone well from hurricane Irene.  I live in West Haven and while we have a beautiful beach, I was fortunate to escape flooding or any major damage.

I was trying to think of somewhere to go take some structural shots this week and ended up in a familiar location.  Let's see who's paying attention ;-)

loved the contrasting colors in this piece
Although this one is not of a sculture or building, I was trying to fill the frame with one object.
I like the way the vines are growing upward.
I have added a few additional photos on fotothing.com under my username: abpascale if you'd like to take a look.  More will be added this weekend :)
